DUBAI — Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called on Monday for closer regional cooperation to restore stability in the Strait of Hormuz, blaming what he described as “US aggression” for tensions in the strategic waterway.Araghchi made the remarks during separate phone calls with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB reported Tuesday.Iran and Oman huddled throughout the weekend and into Monday to hammer out an arrangement for ships to safely pass through the strait.The talks aren’t meant to end the US-Iran conflict, but mediators hope even a temporary agreement on an important issue could cool tempers, allow a lifting of maritime blockades and ultimately juice talks on implementing a preliminary peace deal Washington and Tehran reached in June.The talks covered bilateral relations and the latest regional developments, according to IRIB.Oman has presented a proposal to Iran for a joint regional mechanism to manage the Strait of Hormuz with voluntary fees, Reuters reported.Under the Omani proposal, which has regional backing, Iran would not exercise sole control of the vital waterway, an unnamed Gulf source told the agency.The proposal is based on the Strait of Malacca, where those who use the strait voluntarily contribute to fund navigation, environmental protection and search and rescue.The Omanis have proposed establishing a regional consortium of Iran and the Gulf states.
