Most Germans say government lacks clear strategy on Iran war: poll

BERLIN — More than two-thirds of Germans believe their government lacks a clear strategy on how to respond to the Iran war, according to a survey published by Internationale Politik on Saturday. The poll found that 68% of respondents said the government does not have a clear approach, while 28% said it does.Support for the government’s stance was strongest among voters of the ruling Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU), where a narrow majority of 54% said the government has a defined position. In contrast, only 43% of supporters of the governing Social Democratic Party (SPD) shared that view, while skepticism was even higher among opposition groups.Among voters of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), 86% said they do not see a clear government strategy. Similar views were expressed by 78% of The Left Party supporters and 69% of Alliance 90/The Greens voters.Regional differences were also notable, with only 17% of respondents in eastern Germany believing the government has a clear approach, compared to 82% who disagreed.By age group, 76% of respondents aged 18 to 29 said the government lacks a clear course, while just 20% believed otherwise.Following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz initially expressed support but has since criticized Washington, accusing the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump of lacking a clear plan.BERLIN — More than two-thirds of Germans believe their government lacks a clear strategy on how to respond to the Iran war, according to a survey published by Internationale Politik on Saturday.
