TEHRAN — Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is in “full health” after sustaining injuries during a joint US-Israeli strike targeting Iran’s leadership compound at the start of the war earlier this year, a senior Iranian official said. The remarks marked the first public account detailing Khamenei’s health condition and the circumstances surrounding the attack.According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, Director General of Protocol at the Office of the Supreme Leader Mazaher Hosseini said Mojtaba Khamenei was injured during strikes on Feb. 28 targeting the leadership compound in Tehran, before he was later selected as supreme leader.Hosseini said he was present during the attack and confirmed that several nearby sites were struck, including locations where senior Iranian officials were killed, among them former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Mojtaba Khamenei’s father. He added that Mojtaba Khamenei was not inside the lecture hall where he usually delivered speeches at the time of the bombardment, noting that the site was later “flattened” in the strikes.Hosseini also said Khamenei’s residence was targeted during the attack, adding that his wife and several others were killed.According to Hosseini, Mojtaba Khamenei was knocked to the ground by the blast wave while heading toward the residence and suffered injuries to his kneecap and lower back.“The back injury has improved during this period, and the kneecap injury will soon heal as well. He is in full health,” Hosseini said, according to Fars.He also dismissed speculation about injuries to Khamenei’s forehead, saying there was only a “small crack behind the ear” that had already been treated.Hosseini added that Iran’s adversaries were seeking audio, video, or other material related to Khamenei “to carry out action against him,” saying the Iranian leader would address the public at an “appropriate time.”Mojtaba Khamenei was selected supreme leader on March 9 following the killing of his father, Ali Khamenei, in the Feb. 28 US-Israeli strikes. Since assuming office, he has communicated only through written statements.Regional tensions intensified after the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, prompting attacks by Tehran and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil and gas shipments.A ceasefire took effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation efforts, but the first round of talks held in Islamabad on April 11 failed to secure a lasting agreement. The truce was later extended by US President Donald Trump without a specified deadline.Since April 13, the United States has enforced a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic in the strategic waterway.TEHRAN — Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is in “full health” after sustaining injuries during a joint US-Israeli strike targeting Iran’s leadership compound at the start of the war earlier this year, a senior Iranian official said.
