BEIRUT — The Israeli army on Tuesday called on residents of the southern Lebanese city of Tyre and its surrounding areas to evacuate ahead of expected strikes.“Urgent warning to the residents of the city of Tyre, including the Christian quarter, and the camps and surrounding neighborhoods,” read a message posted on X by the Israeli military’s Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee.“For your safety, we ask you to immediately evacuate your homes … and move north of the Zahrani River.”An Israeli spokesman said it was preparing to act “forcefully”, accusing Hezbollah of breaching the ceasefire. The evacuation warning issued for Tyre is significant because, for the first time, it includes the city’s Christian quarter, signaling Israel can strike southern Lebanon hard.According to the map published by the Israeli military, the warning covers most of the city.It appears to be a signal from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli military that while Donald Trump may have curtailed further attacks on Beirut, Israel retains the ability to strike southern Lebanon hard.Israeli forces have killed at least 14 people and wounded dozens in air attacks across southern Lebanon after Iran warned of “crushing measures” if Israel presses ahead with its assault on the country. The killings on Monday came after Iran and Israel traded fire in the most significant escalation since their “ceasefire” began on April 8.Iran continues to insist that developments in Lebanon are linked to any potential agreement in the Gulf.Netanyahu has rejected that as an unacceptable equation. But Trump, in effect, is acknowledging the connection because he is keen to secure a deal, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and then move on to other priorities.BEIRUT — The Israeli army on Tuesday called on residents of the southern Lebanese city of Tyre and its surrounding areas to evacuate ahead of expected strikes.“Urgent warning to the residents of the city of Tyre, including the Christian quarter, and the camps and surrounding neighborhoods,” read a message posted on X by the Israeli military’s Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee.“For your safety, we ask you to immediately evacuate your homes … and move north of the Zahrani River.”An Israeli spokesman said it was preparing to act “forcefully”, accusing Hezbollah of breaching the ceasefire.
