Trump rejects Iran’s version of proposed US-Iran deal

DUBAI — US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Iran’s stated version of a proposed deal on stopping the war was not what was agreed to by both sides even as senior officials said Washington and Tehran may sign an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit next week.Trump has taken to social media to condemn Iran after Iranian media reported extensively on terms of a peace deal being hammered out.Iran’s description of the proposed agreement “bears no relation to the truth,” Trump said, labeling the Iranians “very dishonorable people to deal with.”A senior Iranian official indicated overnight that a deal is likely, said a G7 official and a diplomat from outside the group, who both asked not to be named. An interim deal between the US and Iran would extend the ceasefire, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and pave the way for talks on Iran’s nuclear program, a diplomatic source told CNN.The source said the two sides agreed on the text of the memorandum of understanding, but it has yet to receive final signoff.A signing ceremony would most likely be held in Geneva, Switzerland, sources say and it could take place as early as Sunday. Trump said on Friday that Iran’s leaked comments on a deal with the United States do not represent what has been agreed ‌to in writing.”What they said, including their weak and pathetic statement on having a deal, bears no relation to the truth. Very dishonorable people to deal with. With them, there is no such thing as dealing in good faith. AMAZING!,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.”They better get their act together, and FAST!,” Trump said.Earlier on Friday, a senior US official said there are five key terms in the agreement: Iran’s nuclear material will be destroyed and removed, its nuclear program will be dismantled, none of its frozen money will be released until it meets certain demands, the Strait of Hormuz will be open, and Iran must not fund terrorist groups.Terms of the deal as described on Friday by Iranian officials appear to offer Tehran much of what it has demanded so far, with Trump appearing to win little of what he has sought, beyond the reopening of the ‌Strait of Hormuz, which Iran shut after he ordered attacks in February.A senior Iranian source told Reuters on Friday that the draft would waive sanctions on Iran’s oil, unfreeze billions of dollars of its funds, and require a cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon. The waiving of sanctions, unfreezing of Iranian assets and halt to Israeli attacks on Lebanon are essential Iranian demands. The source made no mention of what Iran might offer in return.Iran has made no commitments regarding its nuclear program or control of the Strait of Hormuz in the current draft of the memorandum of understanding with the US, Iran’s official state news agency IRNA said.According to IRNA, the “current draft agreement” states that “Iran undertakes no new commitments” on nuclear weapons, with further negotiations on the issue set to take place in a 60-day period following the signing of the agreement. Those negotiations would focus on “the continuation of Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, the lifting of unilateral American sanctions and mechanisms for compensation and reparations,” IRNA said.Across weeks of negotiations, there have been repeated contradictory signals from US and Iranian officials on the contents of the draft deal, which Trump indicated on Thursday is close to being signed.IRNA said the current draft agreement also makes no commitment regarding the transfer of control over the Strait of Hormuz, adding that future administration of the crucial waterway will be decided jointly by Iran and Oman, with no American role.Other key points in the draft agreement include an end to the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and the immediate release of a portion of Iran’s frozen assets, according to the Iranian broadcaster.DUBAI — US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Iran’s stated version of a proposed deal on stopping the war was not what was agreed to by both sides even as senior officials said Washington and Tehran may sign an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit next week.Trump has taken to social media to condemn Iran after Iranian media reported extensively on terms of a peace deal being hammered out.Iran’s description of the proposed agreement “bears no relation to the truth,” Trump said, labeling the Iranians “very dishonorable people to deal with.”A senior Iranian official indicated overnight that a deal is likely, said a G7 official and a diplomat from outside the group, who both asked not to be named.
