WASHINGTON — The United States and China have reached a consensus on recommendations for more favorable tariff treatment covering $30 billion worth of non-sensitive goods in each direction, the White House said Friday.The announcement followed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s three-day visit to the United States with his wife, Peng Liyuan. It marked Xi’s first state visit to Washington in more than a decade and his second visit to the US since 2015.Under the tariff framework, US exports covered by the recommendations include agricultural products, fish and seafood, logs and wood products, cosmetics and medical devices.US imports from China covered by the framework include consumer products such as small appliances, toys, holiday decorations and children’s car seats.The two sides also launched a working group to address market access barriers in the agricultural sector.“China will import at least 10 million metric tons of coal from the United States in 2027 and again in 2028,” the White House said.President Donald Trump also urged Xi to increase production of refined petroleum products to help stabilize global supplies, according to the statement.The two countries established a Board of Investment to discuss potential investment opportunities and obstacles and provide a structured channel for addressing commercially significant investment issues.Washington and Beijing will also continue discussions over US concerns about supply chain shortages involving rare earths and other critical minerals, with the goal of restoring shipments to appropriate levels, the White House said.Xi and Trump discussed “fostering peace and prosperity” and agreed to build what the White House described as “a constructive relationship of strategic stability” based on respect, fairness and reciprocity.The two leaders discussed several global issues, including Russia, North Korea and Iran.
